PCOS

What It Is
Polycystic ovary syndrome, PCOS, is a common hormonal condition affecting people with ovaries, often involving irregular cycles, elevated androgen levels, and, in many cases, insulin resistance. Insulin resistance and PCOS frequently occur together, and weight can play a meaningful role in symptom severity for many, though not all, people with PCOS.
Why GLP-1 Medications Come Up Here
GLP-1 medications are not formally FDA-approved specifically for PCOS. However, a growing body of research, including a 2026 systematic review, has examined liraglutide and semaglutide in people with PCOS and found notable weight loss along with improvements in metabolic and reproductive markers compared to placebo. The exact mechanism connecting GLP-1 activity to reproductive hormone changes isn't fully understood yet, and research in this area is ongoing.
What This Means for You
If you have PCOS and are also considering a GLP-1 medication for an approved indication such as weight management or type 2 diabetes, it's worth discussing with your provider whether your PCOS symptoms might also improve as a secondary effect, though this shouldn't be the sole reason a medication is prescribed given the current evidence base.
Talk to Your Provider About
Whether your insulin resistance, weight, or reproductive symptoms are the primary concern, and what treatment combination, which may or may not include a GLP-1 medication, makes sense for your specific presentation of PCOS.
