The BMI formula itself is identical for men and women — weight divided by height squared. But BMI has well-documented limitations that affect women more often in practice:
Body composition varies by sex. Women naturally carry a higher percentage of body fat than men at the same BMI, since BMI can't distinguish fat mass from lean mass.
Muscle mass skews results. A muscular woman can register as "overweight" on BMI despite low body fat, because muscle weighs more than fat by volume.
Menopause shifts fat distribution, often increasing abdominal fat even without a significant BMI change — meaning BMI can understate health-relevant changes during this life stage.
Pregnancy and postpartum BMI aren't meaningful in the same way — weight changes during and after pregnancy follow a different pattern entirely.
