Fatty Liver Disease

What It Is
Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, MASLD, formerly known as NAFLD, is the most common liver condition worldwide, affecting an estimated 30 percent of the global population. It ranges from simple fat accumulation in the liver to a more serious inflammatory form called MASH, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, which can progress to scarring and more serious liver damage if untreated.
Why GLP-1 Medications Are Used
Wegovy carries a specific FDA approval for treating MASH, granted under the FDA's accelerated approval pathway. This approval is distinct from Wegovy's weight-management indication. Beyond Wegovy specifically, broader research on GLP-1 medications has shown histologic improvement in liver disease markers in clinical trials, though most GLP-1 medications are not formally approved for MASLD or MASH outside of Wegovy's specific approval.
The Bigger Picture
Clinical guidance for people with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes recommends screening for MASLD-related liver scarring risk, and identifies GLP-1 receptor agonists as a first-line pharmacological option for steatohepatitis in this population, alongside pioglitazone. Weight loss through any effective, sustained method remains a foundational part of managing this condition.
Talk to Your Provider About
Whether liver-related bloodwork or imaging is appropriate for you, particularly if you have prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, or obesity, and whether Wegovy's specific MASH approval applies to your situation versus another GLP-1 medication being used off-label.
