Wegovy® (semaglutide) is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, available as a once-weekly injection or once-daily tablet, approved for chronic weight management in adults and adolescents aged 12 and older with obesity or overweight. It is also approved to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in adults with established cardiovascular disease and obesity or overweight.

Wegovy® (semaglutide) is an FDA-approved GLP-1 receptor agonist indicated for chronic weight management, used together with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

Approved uses include:

Adults with obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m²)
Adults who are overweight (BMI ≥27 kg/m²) with at least one weight-related condition
Adolescents aged 12 and older with obesity who meet prescribing criteria
Reducing the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in adults with established cardiovascular disease and either obesity or overweight
Treatment of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) — approved under the FDA's accelerated approval pathway, contingent on confirmatory trial results

As of December 2025, Wegovy is available both as a once-weekly injection and as a once-daily 25 mg oral tablet — the first oral GLP-1 approved specifically for weight management.

Dosage

Injection:

Gradually escalated from 0.25 mg up to a maintenance dose of 2.4 mg once weekly, in steps designed to reduce GI side effects
Full dosing schedule and any adjustments should follow your provider's guidance

Tablet:

25 mg once daily
Must be taken under the same strict administration rules as other oral semaglutide products (see below)

Administration

Injection: subcutaneous, once weekly, at any time of day, with or without food — into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm, rotating sites regularly.

Tablet: taken first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, with no more than 4 oz of plain water, at least 30 minutes before food, beverages, or other oral medications.

Wegovy injection and tablet should not be combined with each other or with any other semaglutide-containing or GLP-1 receptor agonist product.

Reduce cardiovascular risk in adults with established cardiovascular disease

Results vary by individual and depend on consistent use alongside nutrition and activity changes.

Side Effects

The most frequently reported side effects include:

Nausea
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Constipation
Abdominal pain
Headache
Fatigue
Injection-site reactions (injection form)

Gastrointestinal side effects are sometimes severe and are most common during dose escalation.

Warnings

Wegovy carries the same boxed warning as other semaglutide products regarding thyroid C-cell tumor risk observed in rodent studies, with the same contraindications for personal/family history of MTC or MEN 2.

Other important warnings include:

Acute pancreatitis
Acute kidney injury, typically associated with dehydration from GI side effects
Gallbladder disease
Increased resting heart rate — clinical trials showed average increases of 1–4 bpm; monitor and report palpitations or a racing heartbeat to your provider
Serious hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis and angioedema
Risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior — discuss any mood changes with your provider promptly

Seek immediate medical attention for severe abdominal pain, difficulty breathing, or facial/throat swelling.

Drug Interactions

Tell your provider about all medications and supplements before starting Wegovy. Particular caution is needed with:

Insulin and sulfonylureas — increased hypoglycemia risk
Oral hormonal contraceptives and other oral medications — Wegovy's delayed gastric emptying can affect absorption

Storage

Before first use: refrigerate at 36°F–46°F (2°C–8°C). Do not freeze.
After first use: follow manufacturer instructions for your specific pen or tablet packaging; protect from heat and direct light.
Keep out of reach of children. Never share a pen between patients, even with a new needle.
