Obesity

COND-000001

What It Is

Obesity is a chronic medical condition generally defined as a body mass index of 30 or higher, though BMI alone doesn't capture the full picture for every individual. It is increasingly recognized by major medical organizations as a disease in its own right, driven by a complex mix of genetics, environment, metabolism, and behavior, rather than a simple failure of willpower.

Why GLP-1 Medications Are Used

Obesity is the core approved indication for GLP-1 medications specifically developed for weight management, including Wegovy and Zepbound. These medications reduce appetite and slow gastric emptying, which together reduce overall food intake. Clinical trials have shown substantial average weight loss, with some tirzepatide trial participants losing over 20 percent of body weight at the highest doses.

Why This Matters Beyond the Scale

Obesity is strongly linked to a range of other conditions covered elsewhere in this library, including type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, and fatty liver disease. A growing clinical perspective, sometimes called the Obesity First approach, treats obesity as a primary condition worth addressing directly, rather than only managing its downstream complications individually.
