The AWARD Trials: Dulaglutide's Foundational Diabetes Evidence
TRIAL-000017
Part of the DietApp.com GLP-1 Trial Database, a comprehensive, regularly reviewed resource.
What It Is
AWARD, Assessment of Weekly AdministRation of LY2189265 in Diabetes, is the six-study Phase 3 clinical trial program that established dulaglutide's original approval for type 2 diabetes, the foundational evidence behind Trulicity, separate from the later cardiovascular evidence covered in the REWIND trial.
Key Results
Across the six AWARD studies, once-weekly dulaglutide 1.5 mg was superior to the active comparator, exenatide, insulin glargine, metformin, or sitagliptin, in five of six trials, with more patients reaching target A1C levels. In AWARD-1 specifically, dulaglutide 1.5 mg reduced A1C by 1.51 percentage points compared to 0.99 for twice-daily exenatide and 0.46 for placebo. Dulaglutide was non-inferior to liraglutide in AWARD-6, a genuinely close head-to-head result between two established GLP-1 medications.
A Notable Related Finding: Kidney Protection
AWARD-7, a related trial specifically in patients with type 2 diabetes and moderate-to-severe chronic kidney disease, found once-weekly dulaglutide reduced the rate of kidney function decline compared to insulin glargine over one year, evidence that predates and complements the cardiovascular and kidney findings covered in REWIND.
Why This Program Matters
AWARD is the original reason dulaglutide became an approved, widely prescribed diabetes medication in the first place, before any of its cardiovascular or kidney benefits were established. It's the foundational glycemic-control evidence that every later Trulicity finding builds on.
