Real, extensive research across multiple large, independent studies has found a genuine association between GLP-1 medications and increased hair loss risk, particularly with semaglutide and tirzepatide.
The Real, Substantial Evidence
A July 2026 BMJ study of roughly 50,000 people found GLP-1 use associated with a 37% increased risk of alopecia compared to SGLT-2 inhibitor diabetes medications. A separate study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, covering more than 1 million participants, found significantly higher rates of alopecia with GLP-1s than with metformin.
What Type of Hair Loss This Actually Is
The two most commonly reported subtypes are telogen effluvium, temporary, diffuse shedding often linked to rapid weight loss itself, and androgenetic alopecia, pattern hair thinning.
A Real, Important Reassurance
Despite the statistically significant relative risk increase, researchers consistently emphasize the absolute risk remains low. This is a real, meaningful, but genuinely uncommon side effect.
