Wegovy vs. Zepbound: Which Weight-Loss Medication Is Right for You?

COMP-000003

Direct Answer

Wegovy (semaglutide) and Zepbound (tirzepatide) are both FDA-approved specifically for chronic weight management, unlike their sister diabetes brands. Head-to-head trial data, SURMOUNT-5, found Zepbound produced significantly greater average weight loss than Wegovy at 72 weeks, 20.2 percent versus 13.7 percent.

A Real Difference Beyond Weight Loss

Zepbound carries a distinct FDA approval for moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity, an indication Wegovy does not have. If sleep apnea is part of your health picture, this is worth discussing directly with your provider.

Both Now Come in Pill Form

Wegovy launched a 25 mg oral tablet in December 2025, the first oral GLP-1 approved specifically for weight management. Zepbound remains injection-only as of this writing.

Side Effects

Both share a similar GI side effect profile, most pronounced during dose escalation. Neither has a clearly better tolerability profile across the board, individual response varies.

Which One Might Your Doctor Prescribe

If sleep apnea is a factor, Zepbound's specific approval may make it the more direct fit. Otherwise, insurance coverage and individual response often drive the decision more than trial averages alone.
