Obstructive Sleep Apnea

COND-000004

What It Is

Obstructive sleep apnea, OSA, is a condition where the upper airway repeatedly narrows or collapses during sleep, disrupting breathing and sleep quality. It's a frequent companion to obesity, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic syndrome, and untreated OSA is linked to a range of downstream health risks.

Why GLP-1 Medications Are Used

Zepbound holds a distinct FDA approval for treating moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity, separate from its weight-management approval. Excess tissue around the neck and upper airway contributes directly to airway narrowing during sleep, so meaningful weight loss can reduce the frequency and severity of breathing interruptions. Clinical trial data has shown substantial reductions in the apnea-hypopnea index, the standard measure of OSA severity, in patients treated with tirzepatide.

What This Doesn't Replace

A GLP-1 medication is not a substitute for standard OSA treatment such as CPAP therapy unless your provider specifically determines otherwise. Some research has explored GLP-1 medications as an add-on to existing PAP therapy rather than a replacement for it, though this remains an active area of study.
