What Is Semaglutide? Ozempic®, Wegovy®, Benefits, Side Effects & What to Expect
If you've recently been prescribed semaglutide, you've probably noticed it goes by more than one name. Semaglutide is the active ingredient in two FDA-approved medications — Ozempic® and Wegovy® — each with different approved uses, dosing, and treatment goals.
For medication-specific detail, see our Semaglutide Guide, Ozempic Guide, and Wegovy Guide.

What Is Semaglutide?
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist — a lab-made version of a natural gut hormone that regulates blood sugar and appetite. It stimulates insulin release when blood sugar is elevated, slows stomach emptying, and increases feelings of fullness. Depending on the brand, it's approved for blood sugar management or chronic weight management.

A significant recent change: as of May 2026, Rybelsus has been discontinued and replaced by a new oral formulation launched under the Ozempic brand. Separately, Wegovy launched its own oral tablet in December 2025 — the first oral GLP-1 approved specifically for weight management.
How Semaglutide Works
Stimulates insulin release specifically when blood glucose is elevated
Suppresses glucagon, which otherwise raises blood sugar
Slows gastric emptying, extending fullness after meals
Reduces appetite signaling in the brain — the primary driver of weight loss on the Wegovy indication
Ozempic vs. Wegovy: The Short Version
Same active ingredient, different approved purpose and dosing ceiling. Ozempic tops out at 2 mg weekly for glycemic control; Wegovy goes higher, to 2.4 mg weekly, reflecting what its own trials showed was needed for meaningful weight loss. Full comparison: Ozempic vs. Wegovy.
Common Side Effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, headache, and fatigue are the most frequently reported side effects, most noticeable during dose escalation. Full breakdown: Semaglutide Side Effects.
Why Tracking Matters During Treatment
Tracking your injection or tablet schedule, weight trend, appetite, hydration, protein intake, and symptoms gives your care team a much clearer picture than relying on memory. DietApp logs all of this in one place.
