Beginning July 1, 2026, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is launching the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program. This temporary initiative, scheduled to run through December 31, 2027, is designed to expand access to weight-loss medications for eligible Medicare Part D beneficiaries.

What is the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program?

Federal law generally prevents standard Medicare Part D from covering medications prescribed exclusively for weight loss. The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program operates entirely outside of the standard Part D benefit to provide a short-term solution. Through a centralized processing system, it grants eligible individuals access to specific medications for a fixed $50 monthly copayment.

Which Medications Are Covered?

The program covers the following GLP-1 medications when they are used specifically to reduce excess body weight and maintain weight reduction:

  • Wegovy® (both injections and tablets)

  • Zepbound® (specifically the KwikPen® formulation)

  • Foundayo® (tablets)

Who Is Eligible for the Bridge Program?

To qualify for this coverage, individuals must be at least 18 years old, actively enrolled in a Medicare Part D plan, and not already eligible to receive GLP-1 medications through their Part D plan for conditions like type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, you must meet specific medical criteria at the start of your therapy:

  • A Body Mass Index (BMI) of 35 or higher.

  • A BMI of 30 or higher combined with a diagnosis of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, uncontrolled hypertension, or chronic kidney disease (stage 3a or above).

  • A BMI of 27 or higher combined with prediabetes, or a history of a heart attack, stroke, or peripheral artery disease.

How the Process Works

You do not need to enroll in a new plan to participate; the process is managed directly by your medical provider and a central Medicare processor:

  1. Consult your doctor to determine if a covered GLP-1 medication aligns with your health goals.

  2. If appropriate, your doctor will transmit a prescription directly to your pharmacy.

  3. The pharmacy will then initiate a prior authorization request for your provider to complete and submit to the central processor.

  4. Once Medicare approves the authorization, you can pick up your medication at the pharmacy for the $50 copay.
